Can an overhead stop go on a fire door?

A stop only model can, when its maker lists it for fire doors: check the product page. A mechanical hold open that a person has to release is not allowed on a fire door, because the door has to close in a fire. To hold a fire door open, use a holder that releases on the fire alarm signal, such as an electromagnetic door holder . See NFPA 80 .

An overhead door stop mounts between the top of the door and the frame and stops the door at a set opening angle, so it cannot swing into a wall, strain its hinges or overload its closer. A holder does the same and can also hold the door open. Working overhead, they stay clear of feet, carts and floor cleaning, where floor and wall stops get kicked and damaged.

Surface models bolt to the face of the door and the frame. Concealed models are mortised into the top of the door and the frame, so they are hidden when the door is closed. Most are sized by the width of the door opening and set at installation to the angle the door should stop at.
