Getting on and off a roof safely is a fall-protection problem, and OSHA treats it that way. This collection covers the hardware at the roofline: ladder safety posts that extend a fixed ladder above the hatch opening, with roof hatches and hatch safety railings joining the lineup.

The ladder-to-roof transition

Stepping off the top of a fixed ladder at the roofline is the most exposed moment of the climb. A ladder safety post mounts at the roof hatch and gives the climber a continuous handhold through the transition, then folds or telescopes out of the way.
