Can I use a hold open arm on a fire door?

No. A fire door has to close by itself in a fire, so a mechanical hold open arm is not allowed on it. To hold a fire door open, use an electromagnetic door holder that releases on the fire alarm signal. See the fire door section of our door closer selection guide and NFPA 80 .

What size closer do I need?

Size follows the door's width and weight and whether it is an exterior door. Many closers adjust across a range of sizes. Our door closer selection guide covers sizing by door.

Surface Door Closers

56 products in this collection ↓

A surface closer mounts on the face of the door or frame and brings the door shut after each use. Closers are graded under ANSI/BHMA A156.4 and sized by door width and weight; our ANSI/BHMA A156.4 closer guide explains the grades, and each product page lists its own.

Mounting	Where the closer goes
Regular arm	On the pull side of the door, arm to the frame
Top jamb	On the frame above the door, push side
Parallel arm	On the push side of the door, arm parallel to the door

Arm options change what the door does: a hold open arm keeps the door open at a set point, a cush arm adds a built in stop, and a delayed action closer slows the first part of the closing swing so slow traffic can get through.
