Choose by spill type

White (oil-only) picks up petroleum, fuels, and lubricants while repelling water, which is what you want outdoors and around drains. Gray (universal) handles any non-aggressive liquid: water-based coolants, solvents, hydraulic fluid, oil. Yellow (chemical/HazMat) is rated for acids, bases, and aggressive chemicals where universal pads would break down or off-gas.

Choose by format

Sorbents are the building block: pads for wipe-down, rolls for high-volume floor coverage, socks for diking around equipment, booms for outdoor/water containment. Spill kits bundle absorbents with PPE, disposal bags, and a portable container so a 5-gallon drum-leak response doesn't require running back to the supply room. Secondary containment covers the prevention side: drum pallets, IBC platforms, and decks that catch a leak before it reaches the floor.

Compliance context

Facilities storing more than 1,320 gallons of oil aboveground are covered by the EPA SPCC rule (40 CFR 112), which requires a written plan and the means to prevent and respond to discharges. OSHA 1910.120 (HAZWOPER) requires hazardous-substance spill responders to have appropriate equipment available before the spill happens, not after. DOT 49 CFR 393.95 requires placarded hazmat carriers to carry a spill kit sized to the load. The right kit and absorbent on the wall is the cheapest line of defense in any of these.
