Non-Sparking Tools
Metal non-sparking hand tools are made from nonferrous alloys such as aluminum bronze or copper beryllium instead of steel. Struck, dropped or dragged, they are less likely than steel to throw a spark hot enough to ignite flammable vapors, liquids or combustible dust. Crews use them around fuel and solvent handling, in refineries and chemical plants and in grain and other dusty operations. In classified areas, the site's hazard assessment decides whether they are called for. Our non-sparking tools guide explains how they work and where they fit.
Choosing a tool
- Match the tool to the work. Non-sparking alloys are softer than steel. Use each tool only for the job it is made for and follow the maker's care instructions.
- Striking tools such as sledges, hammers and wedges are listed with their head weight and overall length.
- Shovels, scoops and brushes handle cleanup and dust control where a steel blade or steel wire could strike a spark.
- Read the maker's cautions. Copper-based tools should not come into direct contact with acetylene, ethylene oxide or some explosives. The alloys conduct electricity, so ground the tool where static charge is a concern.
Non-magnetic, not MR Safe
The copper-based alloys are essentially non-magnetic, which is why these tools also turn up around MRI suites and other strong magnets. Non-magnetic is a materials statement from the maker. It is not the MR Safe label, which no metal tool can carry. The guide covers non-magnetic tools in more detail.
What the rules say
OSHA's flammable liquids rule requires precautions against ignition sources, including mechanical sparks, where flammable vapors may be present. OSHA does not set a general rule that hand tools must be non-sparking, though a few operation-specific rules call for nonsparking material, such as the cleaning tools used in spray-finishing areas. Whether reduced-spark tools are one of your controls comes out of your hazard assessment. See what OSHA requires, OSHA 1910.106 for flammable liquids, NFPA 30 and NFPA 70 hazardous locations.
