Overview
ASTM E2886 is the critical test standard for evaluating vents in wildfire-prone areas. This test method simulates both ember intrusion and direct flame impingement conditions that occur during wildfires. Products passing this test have demonstrated their ability to prevent fire penetration through ventilation openings.
Test Requirements
- Ember Intrusion Test: Vents exposed to glowing ember bed for 10 minutes
- Flame Impingement Test: Direct flame exposure at 1,100°F for 3 minutes
- Temperature monitoring on unexposed side (must remain below 350°F)
- Visual inspection for flame penetration or sustained ignition
- Cotton indicator test for ember passage
