Is There Such a Thing as an OSHA-Approved Flammable Storage Cabinet?
No. And the reason that matters is not pedantry. Buyers ask for an OSHA-approved cabinet because they want assurance from somebody other than the seller, and there is a real way to get that. It is just not called OSHA. This page covers what the OSHA rule actually asks of a cabinet, why a listing is optional under NFPA 30, and what an FM Approval or a UL Listing genuinely adds, so you can tell a mark that means something from a line of catalog copy.

The short version
- There is no OSHA approval for storage cabinets. OSHA writes and enforces the rule. It does not test cabinets or maintain a list of approved models.
- NFPA 30 accepts two routes: a cabinet that is listed, or a cabinet built to the construction specification. An AHJ or a specification can still require the listing.

OSHA does not approve, list or certify cabinets
OSHA is a regulator. It writes rules and enforces them through inspection and citation. It does not run a product testing laboratory for storage cabinets, and it does not publish a directory of approved models. So no cabinet can hold OSHA approval, and any listing that claims it is using the phrase loosely.
That does not make the phrase meaningless, though. What is usually meant is that the cabinet satisfies the design requirements in the OSHA rule for flammable liquid storage cabinets, at 29 CFR 1910.106(d)(3). That is a real, checkable thing: wall construction, door behaviour, and a raised liquid-tight bottom. The requirements themselves are covered on the OSHA 1910.106 page, which is where that detail lives.
Why the distinction is worth money. A mark can be useful evidence, but the authority having jurisdiction and the employer still have to evaluate the requirement that was actually adopted, and how the cabinet is used. Buying a marked cabinet and then propping the doors open, overfilling it, or storing incompatible chemicals together fails just as comprehensively as buying an ordinary metal cupboard. The mark buys you evidence about the box. It buys nothing about how you use it.
Listed, or built to the specification
This is the part that resolves most of the confusion. NFPA 30 does not require a third-party listing on a flammable liquid storage cabinet. It accepts either a listed cabinet or one built to the construction specification set out in the standard. Under the model-code text either route is acceptable, and a cabinet with no mark on it is not automatically a problem. An AHJ, an adopted local code, a project specification or an insurer can require more. The NFPA 30 page carries the cabinet quantity limits that follow from qualifying under it.
What differs between the two routes is who is vouching. On the construction route, the manufacturer is describing its own product and you are taking that at face value. On the listing route, an independent body has tested the model, and under Class 6050 the evaluation may also reach the plant that builds it. If you are specifying for a regulated site, writing a bid, or answering to a carrier, that difference is the whole reason to care.
What an FM Approval actually covers
The document behind the mark is FM Approvals Class Number 6050, the Examination Standard for Storage Cabinets for Ignitable (Flammable or Combustible) Liquids, dated December 2022. Its own statement of scope is broader than a product test: certification criteria may include performance requirements, marking requirements, examination of the manufacturing facilities, an audit of quality assurance procedures, and a follow-up program. Note the word may: how far that reaches depends on the certification scheme, so it is worth asking rather than assuming.
The construction requirements the standard sets out:
- A lockable latching mechanism on the doors. On a two-door model a separate latching system is not required for both doors if one of them is designed to secure both in the closed position.
- A leak-tight spill containment sump or pan not less than 2 in. (51 mm) deep.
- Flame arresters on any vents. Cabinets may have upper and lower side vents, or vents on the top. All vents must be equipped with a flame arrester assembly and a means of plugging the vents externally. Upper and lower vents in the rear wall are allowed where side vents would be ineffective, typically under-counter laboratory use.
- A grounding attachment point on the exterior, arranged so the cabinet finish does not interfere with establishing a proper ground. This one applies to steel cabinets only.
- Capacity not exceeding 120 gallons (455 L). The standard describes cabinets from 4 gallons (15 L) up to that ceiling, and smaller capacities may be considered if they meet the intent of the standard.
Marking is a requirement in its own right. The product has to carry the manufacturer name and address or a traceable marking, the date of manufacture or a traceable code or lot identification, the model number, size, rating and capacity as appropriate, and the conspicuous legend FLAMMABLES - KEEP FIRE AWAY. The certification agency mark of conformity must be displayed visibly and permanently. So a cabinet that genuinely holds the approval should be readable as such on the cabinet itself, which is the easiest check available to you.
The European route, and why you might see minutes on a label. Class 6050 also allows recognition of a cabinet that meets EN 14470 Part 1, provided it passes a load test per 6050, its flame arrester assemblies meet 6050, and a representative of the certification agency witnesses the tests in their entirety. Part 2 of EN 14470 is not covered. Cabinets recognised that way get labelled per EN 14470, including a fire resistance capability stated in minutes, typically 15, 30, 60 or 90. A US-built cabinet listed under 6050 alone will not carry a minutes rating, and its absence is not a deficiency.
What a UL Listing covers
The parallel document is UL 1275, Flammable Liquid Storage Cabinets, currently in its fifth edition dated June 14, 2024. Its construction and performance requirements are based primarily on NFPA 30, NFPA 1 and the International Fire Code, and its scope describes cabinets intended for installation in accordance with those codes. In the United States it covers cabinets up to 120 US gal (454 L) of flammable and combustible liquids, with the maximum capacity rating assigned by the manufacturer. The Canadian figure is 132 US gal (500 L).
For code purposes neither mark outranks the other. NFPA 30 asks for a listed cabinet, not for a particular certifier, so a UL Listing and an FM Approval are equally acceptable answers to that question.

- Ask by model, not by brand. Listings attach to specific models. A manufacturer with a listed flagship line may also sell unlisted models.
- Look at the cabinet. Both schemes require the mark of conformity to be permanent and visible on the product. If it is only on the website, that is worth a question.
- Ask your carrier before you decide it does not matter. A property insurer that follows FM may name FM Approval specifically in a recommendation, even though the fire code would have accepted either route.
- Do not let the mark end the conversation. Capacity per cabinet, how many cabinets a fire area may hold, chemical segregation, and grounding during dispensing are all separate questions a listing does not answer.
