Commercial Locksets

A commercial lever lockset is the lever trim and latch on a door that people use every day, with a locking mechanism on the functions that lock. Two kinds are common. A cylindrical lock, also called a bored lock, fits two round holes: one through the face of the door and one into its edge for the latch. A mortise lock fits a rectangular lock case into a pocket cut in the door edge, with the levers, and on keyed functions the key cylinder, on the faces of the door. Cylindrical locks are graded under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 and mortise locks under A156.13, and Grade 1 is the highest grade in both.

The function decides what locks, from which side and how. A passage latch never locks. An entrance and office lock is locked from inside, by a push button or a turn depending on the lock, and opened with a key from outside. A storeroom lock is always locked from outside and opened with a key. Where the function has no separate deadbolt, the inside lever always opens the door. Most functions have an ANSI/BHMA function number, and each product page gives it where the maker publishes one. Locks are also sold by lever design, finish and door thickness, so check the product page against your door before you order.

An auxiliary deadbolt adds a separate bolt to a door that already has a lockset. ANSI/BHMA A156.36 now covers auxiliary locks, and some makers still publish an older A156.5 grade. One with an occupancy indicator is thrown by a thumbturn inside and shows on the outside whether the room is in use. A separate deadbolt adds a second motion to open the door from inside, so check the code before fitting one to a door in a means of egress.
