Can I use a panic device on a fire door?

Only one listed as fire exit hardware. Where the IBC applies, fire exit hardware has to be listed to both UL 10C and UL 305, and it has no mechanical dogging. A panic-only device is not fire exit hardware, even when a fire rated version of it exists.

What does 36 in or 48 in mean on a rim device?

Most manufacturers size rim devices by the door width they fit, not the length of the bar, so a 48 in device is for a 4 ft wide door. Where panic hardware is required, the IBC also sets how much of the door width the push bar has to cover: see our IBC panic hardware requirements .

Does a rim device come with a cylinder and trim?

Usually not. Cylinder dogging and keyed functions take a cylinder sold separately, and the outside trim is a separate part: see exit device trim and parts . The product page says what is included.

A rim device fits a single door, or a pair of doors with a compatible mullion between them. A pair without a mullion typically takes a vertical rod exit device. Start with the listing your door needs, then the function and the fit.

Delayed egress: Keeps the door locked for a short delay after someone pushes the bar (15 seconds on the devices here) while an alarm sounds, then releases it. It needs its power supply and a connection to the building fire alarm, which releases the door in a fire. Whether it is allowed, and how it must be installed, depends on the adopted building and fire codes, so check with your local code authority before ordering.
