Exit device trim is the hardware on the outside of the door, the side you pull from. The exit device only works from the inside, so the trim decides what happens outside: nothing, a pull, a key or a lever.

Trim has to match the device it mounts to: the manufacturer, the device series and the stile width, since narrow stile devices take narrow trim. Trim for rim devices, vertical rod devices and exit control locks is not interchangeable between them unless the product page says so.

Function	What happens outside
Exit only	Nothing: a blank plate, or no trim at all
Dummy pull	A pull with no latch function
Night latch	A key retracts the latch, then you pull the door open
Classroom	A key locks or unlocks the lever
Storeroom	A key unlocks the lever, which locks again when the key is removed
Passage	The lever always works
