Vertical Rod Exit Devices

A vertical rod exit device latches the door at the top, and on most models at the bottom too, instead of into a strike on the frame edge. That is what lets a pair of doors close against each other with no center mullion, and it is the usual choice for double doors in corridors, gyms and building entrances.

Surface or concealed

Surface vertical rods run on the face of the door and are the simplest to install and service. Concealed vertical rods run inside the door, which looks cleaner and resists tampering, but needs a door prepared for them. Top-rod-only versions drop the bottom rod where a floor strike is impractical.

Choosing one

Match the device to the door width and height, the stile width, and whether the opening is fire-rated. Fire exit hardware is a separate model from panic hardware, so check before you order for a rated door. Rod lengths are set by door height.
