The JL Industries Diamond Series is an insulated galvanneal roof hatch for permanent roof access, made in the USA. The curb and cover both carry 1 in polyisocyanurate insulation at R-6, the welded cover is tested to a 40 psf live load, and the slam latch is tested to 50 psf wind uplift, so the hatch holds its seal and stays shut in weather. Ladder-access sizes serve a fixed ladder; the 30 x 54 in stair size is proportioned for a stairwell. Clear opening is smaller than the curb size, so check the submittal for the model you are specifying. Aluminum, thermally-broken and other sizes are factory orders; ask us for a quote.

Guarding the opening

Under 29 CFR 1910.28(b)(3)(iv), an employee has to be protected from falling into a ladderway hole by a guardrail system with toeboards on the exposed sides, and the entrance to the hole needs a self-closing gate or an offset. The guardrail criteria are in 1910.29. That is the general-industry rule covering operations and maintenance; construction, alteration and repair work is covered instead by 1926 Subpart M, including when it happens inside an existing building. Confirm the final gate or offset configuration with your AHJ before ordering.

Installation note

Is this hatch insulated?

Yes. Both the curb and the cover carry 1 in polyisocyanurate insulation with a thermal resistance of R-6, and a continuous EPDM sponge rubber gasket seals the cover to the curb.

How much load will the cover take?

The 14 ga galvannealed welded cover with its 22 ga liner is tested to support a 40 psf live load, and the slam latch is tested to 50 psf wind uplift. Those are the manufacturer tested figures; confirm them against your own design loads.

Do I need a safety railing as well?

Almost always. The hatch is the opening; guarding it is a separate product. 29 CFR 1910.28(b)(3)(iv) calls for a guardrail system with toeboards around a ladderway hole and a self-closing gate or an offset at the entrance, with criteria in 1910.29. We stock compression-mount and bolt-on railings sized to each hatch, plus a combined hatch and railing unit in the 36 x 30 in size.

Which size do I order?

Order by the curb size that matches your roof opening, not by the clear opening. Three of the four stocked sizes are proportioned for ladder access; the 30 x 54 in is the stair-access size. Clear opening is smaller than the curb, so check the submittal for the exact model.
