Q: What do the numbers in a rating like 4-A:80-B:C mean?

The A number scales with Class A capability, and it is what the coverage math in NFPA 10 keys off. The B number comes from a standardized UL 711 fire test and roughly indicates the area of flammable-liquid fire the unit was rated against. Treat it as a test result rather than a promise about a real fire, where the outcome depends on training and conditions. C carries no number at all: it means the agent was tested as non-conductive, so the unit is rated for use where energized electrical equipment is involved.

Q: Can I use ABC on a server room or sensitive electronics?

It carries a C rating, so it is rated for energized equipment. The issue is the residue. NFPA notes that multipurpose dry chemical residue can cause corrosion under heat and humidity and is difficult to remove, and Buckeye does not recommend these units for delicate electronics. Q: Will ABC work on a kitchen grease fire?

It may knock the flames down, but it is not the correct selection. Cooking oils and fats are Class K, where NFPA 10 points to wet chemical because of the reignition risk with dry chemical. Q: When is a dedicated Class B extinguisher the better buy?

ABC is Class B rated and fine for incidental flammable liquids. ABC dry chemical is a multipurpose agent rated for all three common fire classes, so a single cylinder covers ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, and energized electrical equipment. That makes it a common choice for offices, warehouses, schools, and mixed-occupancy buildings. These are made by Buckeye Fire Equipment in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and each one ships with a wall hook.

Sizing and placement

Size follows the hazard and the floor plan rather than the fire itself. NFPA 10 sets both a maximum travel distance to an extinguisher and a maximum floor area each unit can cover, and the hazard classification of the space feeds into both, so a higher rating can mean fewer units on a floor plate. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 is what makes extinguishers a workplace requirement in most settings, though it carries exemptions where a written evacuation plan means employees are not expected to fight fires. Buckeye's data sheets state these units are UL listed and built in accordance with ANSI/UL 299, the dry chemical extinguisher standard, with ratings established under ANSI/UL 711.

Mounting and cabinets

The included wall hook is enough for a back-of-house wall. In a finished corridor, a public space, or anywhere the cylinder would take abuse or project into a walkway, a cabinet is the usual answer. Vehicles and fleets

On rating alone, all three sizes clear DOT 49 CFR 393.95 for commercial motor vehicles, including the 10 B:C minimum that applies to placarded hazmat power units. Rating is only part of it: the rule also covers labeling, a charge indicator, accessibility, and secure mounting. For a truck or a bus that means a strap-type vehicle bracket rather than the wall hook, which is not built to hold a cylinder against road vibration.
