CO2 Fire Extinguishers
Which CO2 extinguisher size do you need?
Choose by room size and energized-equipment hazard. CO2 is residue-free and non-conductive; for occupied server rooms or sensitive electronics, compare CO2 and Halotron clean agent before standardizing.

CO2 fire extinguishers use compressed carbon dioxide gas as the extinguishing agent. Non-conductive, residue-free, and works by displacing oxygen at the fire. Rated B:C for electrical and flammable-liquid hazards. Portable CO2 extinguishers work alongside fixed clean-agent suppression systems under NFPA 2001. For IT equipment rooms specifically, see NFPA 75 fire protection guidance.
Primary use cases are server rooms, data centers, laboratories, machine shops, and any space with energized electronics where a water or dry-chemical discharge would ruin equipment. Never use water, ABC, or foam near energized electronics. Water shorts circuits. ABC dry chemical leaves corrosive residue that destroys boards, drives, and precision equipment.
Cell tower base stations, two-way radio sites, and telecom equipment shelters are another core CO2 application. NFPA 76, the standard for fire protection of telecommunications facilities, prohibits dry chemical and corrosive-liquid extinguishers in the signal-processing, main distribution frame, and power areas it governs, and Motorola R56 specifies a 7 to 10 lb Class BC CO2 (or equivalent clean-agent) unit for the electronic equipment room. Our communication tower site fire extinguisher guide walks the equipment shelter, generator, and the NFPA 10 service cycle for remote sites, and the sensitive-electronics guide weighs CO2 against Halotron for small or occupied rooms where oxygen displacement is a concern.
One safety note: CO2 produces no lingering suppression. Once the gas disperses, fuel that stays above its autoignition temperature can reflash. And in confined spaces, a full discharge can displace enough oxygen to endanger occupants. Size the extinguisher to the space.
