When do you need a wheeled extinguisher instead of a handheld?

When a code, the fire marshal or an insurer calls for one. At airports the International Fire Code asks for a 125 lb wheeled unit at fuel stations pumping more than 200 gpm, and NFPA 410 asks for a wheeled unit at each gate or every 200 ft of ramp. Elsewhere, ask the local fire marshal or your insurer whether a high-hazard area needs one.

Can I use an ABC wheeled extinguisher where aircraft are fueled?

No. NFPA 407 §4.1.10.3 bans ABC (ammonium phosphate) extinguishers on aircraft fueling vehicles and fuel servicing ramps or aprons, and at airport fuel facilities within 500 ft of aircraft operating areas, because the residue corrodes aircraft. Use Purple K or another BC dry chemical there.

How are wheeled extinguishers delivered?

By freight truck, since a loaded unit weighs well over 100 lb. Make sure someone can receive a freight delivery at the address.

Do wheeled extinguishers need inspections like handhelds?

Yes. NFPA 10 covers wheeled units too: regular inspections, annual maintenance by a certified person and periodic hydrostatic tests. The NFPA 10 guide lists the intervals.

Wheeled fire extinguishers put 50 lb or more of agent on a two-wheel cart that one person can roll to the fire. They are made for large hazards such as airport ramps and fuel stations, fuel docks, bulk flammable liquids, large equipment and outdoor yards. These are US-made units, and NFPA 10 governs their placement, inspection and maintenance just as it does for handhelds.

Airports and fuel servicing

Two rules call for wheeled units at airports. Under the International Fire Code (2024 edition, §2005.6), an airport fuel-dispensing station pumping more than 200 gallons a minute needs one wheeled extinguisher rated at least 80-B:C with at least 125 lb of agent, and a station above 350 gpm needs two. NFPA 410 asks for at least one wheeled extinguisher rated 80-B or higher at each gate or stand, or every 200 ft of ramp. ABC is not allowed on fueling vehicles or fuel servicing ramps. Warehouses, plants and yards

Where ordinary combustibles and flammable liquids sit side by side, an ABC wheeled unit covers both with one cart. Where the hazard is fuel or solvents alone, Purple K is the BC alternative. Electronics, aircraft and clean spaces

Dry chemical leaves a residue that is hard to clean out of electronics and engines. CO2 and Halotron are clean agents and leave none. CO2 has a short range and loses effect in wind, and NFPA 407 advises against it at outdoor fueling. If you need Class A coverage from Halotron, check the A rating on the label.
