The JL Industries Guardsman CL1017M2FX2 is the fire-rated build of the semi-recessed Guardsman, a ligature resistant fire extinguisher cabinet for a 10 lb extinguisher, made in the USA. JL states it is UL classified and labeled up to 2 hours in accordance with UL 1479 (ASTM E814) and CAN/ULC-S115, so it can go into a fire-resistance-rated wall in a behavioral health or institutional building. It has the same 3 in angled trim style as the non-rated CL1017M2, a solid steel door with no pull and no window on a concealed stud rod hinge and a mortise cam lock installed with two keys. The trim is larger, to cover the larger fire-rated wall opening (see the submittal).

Rated wall or not?
The fire-rated build needs a larger wall opening than the non-rated CL1017M2: 14-1/2 in × 29 in × 4 in against 11-1/2 in × 25 in × 3-1/2 in. The two are not interchangeable once the wall is framed, so confirm the wall's rating before you cut the opening. A listed cabinet is valid only for its listed wall assemblies. Confirm the assembly with your AHJ. Our Fire Extinguisher Cabinet Selection Guide covers when a rated cabinet is required.
What ligature resistant means here
The design takes away the usual attachment points of a standard cabinet: the trim edges are angled, the door has no pull or window and the hinge is concealed. JL says the cabinet is internally tested to resist ligature attachment and names no outside test standard, so review it against your facility's own ligature risk assessment.
Extinguisher compatibility
JL rates this tub for Cosmic and Galaxy extinguishers from 2.5 to 10 lb, Mercury from 2.5 to 5 lb and the 5 lb Sentinel. Check your extinguisher's cylinder diameter and handle height against the 6 in tub depth before ordering.
Placement and mounting height follow the NFPA 10 requirements.
Where this model fits
This is the Guardsman for a rated corridor or room wall in a behavioral health unit. The door is solid, so the monthly inspection needs the key too: keep one where staff and the extinguisher inspector can reach it, and mark the cabinet's location, since the door hides the extinguisher (JL can letter the door at the factory on a quote). This model is built to order at the factory. The product image shows the non-rated build with JL's optional cylinder lock and the door open, which has the same 3 in angled trim style, and the cabinet ships built as specified in the table above. JL also builds a fire-rated fully recessed Guardsman (CL1015M2FX2), stainless steel versions and a 20 lb tub. For any of those, request a quote from this page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this cabinet fire-rated?
Yes. JL states it is UL classified and labeled up to 2 hours in accordance with UL 1479 (ASTM E814) and CAN/ULC-S115, so it can go into a fire-resistance-rated wall. A listed cabinet is valid only in its listed wall assemblies, so confirm the assembly with your AHJ.
Do I need a key to open this cabinet?
Yes. The standard M2 door has a mortise cam lock installed, and two keys come with the cabinet. Because the door is solid, staff open it with the key for the monthly inspection, the annual maintenance and in an emergency, so keep a key where they can reach it. JL also builds it with a cylinder lock (L24, the version in the photo), or with a mortise lock fitted with a temporary green core that ships without keys (M5). Ask us for a quote on either.
What makes it ligature resistant?
JL angles the trim edges and hangs the solid door, which has no pull and no window, on a concealed stud rod hinge, so the handle, window frame and exposed hinge of a standard cabinet are gone. JL says the cabinet is internally tested to resist ligature attachment and names no outside test standard, so review it against your own facility ligature risk assessment.
Will a 10 lb fire extinguisher fit this cabinet?
Yes. JL rates the 10-1/2 in × 24 in × 6 in tub for Cosmic and Galaxy extinguishers from 2.5 to 10 lb, Mercury from 2.5 to 5 lb and the 5 lb Sentinel. For another brand, check the cylinder diameter and handle height on its cut sheet against the tub.
How does it mount?
It is semi-recessed in a fire-rated wall opening of 14-1/2 in × 29 in × 4 in, larger than the non-rated CL1017M2 needs, so choose between the two before the wall is framed. Install it to JL's Fire-FX2 installation guide (14I-102), linked below.
Is it ADA compliant?
Yes. The trim projects 3 in, inside the 4 in protrusion limit. JL notes to locate the lock no more than 48 in above the finished floor.
Is it made in the USA?
Yes. JL Industries / Activar manufactures these cabinets in the United States.
