Carbon dioxide is a clean extinguishing agent that leaves no residue and conducts no electricity. It works by displacing oxygen at the fire and cooling the surface, which is why it's safe around energized electrical equipment where water or dry chemical would cause damage. Buckeye makes this 10 lb CO2 unit rated 10-B:C with a 9-second discharge and a 4 to 8 foot effective range.

Primary use cases are server rooms, telecom closets, laboratories, machine shops, and control rooms. CO2 dissipates into the atmosphere after discharge, so there's nothing to wipe off boards, drives, or precision equipment. IT equipment room fire protection under NFPA 75 specifically calls out clean agents over water or dry chemical. Portable CO2 extinguishers work alongside fixed clean-agent suppression systems governed by NFPA 2001. NFPA 75 also covers firestopping the cable and conduit penetrations through the room's fire-rated walls, the passive side of the standard; see our data center firestop compliance guide.

One thing to size for: CO2 produces no lingering suppression. Once the gas disperses, fuel that stays above its autoignition temperature can reflash. In confined spaces, a full discharge can displace enough oxygen to endanger occupants. Match CO2 fire extinguishers' size to room volume.

Constructed from 6061 TG aluminum, plated brass valve, black discharge horn, trigger lever operation. DOT and USCG approved. Operating temperature range of -22°F to +120°F.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the right size for a communication or radio equipment site?

Motorola R56 (Standards and Guidelines for Communication Sites, section 3.12) calls for a 7 to 10 lb Class BC CO2 extinguisher, or an equivalent clean agent, in the electronic equipment room at a communication site, installed before equipment goes in. This is a 10 lb BC-rated CO2 unit, at the top of that size range. R56 is Motorola Solutions' own site standard rather than a law, so confirm the final count and placement against your site design and the authority having jurisdiction.

Why CO2 instead of a dry-chemical (ABC) extinguisher for the equipment room?

CO2 is non-conductive and leaves no residue, so it will not damage energized electronics. Dry-chemical agent leaves a corrosive residue that can ruin boards and connectors, and NFPA 76, the telecommunications fire-protection standard, prohibits dry chemical and corrosive-liquid extinguishers in signal-processing, main distribution frame, and power areas for exactly that reason. Keep a Class ABC unit for general areas and reserve a CO2 unit for the electronics.

Where is it made, and how is it maintained?

This is a Buckeye unit made in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Like any portable extinguisher it needs a monthly visual check and annual maintenance under NFPA 10, plus a hydrostatic test every 5 years for CO2 cylinders. In a small, unventilated shelter, remember that a full CO2 discharge displaces oxygen, so ventilate before re-entry.
