Just over a century. The Delaware incorporation dates to 1923 and the business it grew out of to 1878, though the company did not enter builders hardware until 1963.

What standards are Detex exit devices listed to?

It depends on the line. The V40 rim devices are UL 305 listed and ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 certified; the EAX-300 and EAX-500 alarms are certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.29. Fire exit hardware is a separate model line we do not stock. See the listings section above for the per-model detail.

Detex Corporation makes commercial life-safety door hardware in New Braunfels, Texas. The company was incorporated in Delaware in 1923, with origins in a business Abraham A. Newman founded in 1878. It moved into builders hardware in 1963 and has operated from the New Braunfels plant since 1981.

What Detex makes

Grade 1 panic exit devices, fire exit hardware, delayed-egress locking, battery and hardwired door alarms, low-energy automatic operators, and the trim, strikes and power supplies that go with them. Exit device configurations include rim, surface vertical rod, mortise, and concealed vertical rod. Standards and listings

Listings differ by product line and by configuration, so check the model you are specifying. The five V40 rim exit devices we stock carry UL 305 panic hardware listings and ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 certification. The ECL-230D and ECL-230D-PH exit control locks carry UL 305 panic hardware listings, and of the two, only the ECL-230D-PH carries Detex's NFPA 101 life-safety claim. The ECL-600 is fire-listed by Intertek (Warnock Hersey) to UL 10B. Detex's 2026 price book also describes it as ETL-listed panic hardware, and its comparison chart leaves the UL row blank, so confirm the certification record with Detex before relying on a panic listing for this model. The EAX-300 and EAX-500 door alarms are certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.29 and separately listed as UL 10B/10C fire-door accessories, which supports their use on rated openings when installed within the listed configuration and the manufacturer's instructions. The AO19 operator is certified to ANSI/UL 325 and tested to ANSI/BHMA A156.19.

Fire exit hardware is a separate Detex model line (FV40, FV50, FV51) listed to UL 305 and UL 10C. We do not stock it. Detex publishes Environmental Product Declarations and Health Product Declarations for selected families, which support LEED documentation.
